Interlake JV Football Impresses In Highlight Win

After the Interlake varsity football team defeated the Sammamish on October 3rd, it was time for the JV squad to prove themselves. They knew it was time to get back into form after heartbreaking defeats in the first two weeks of the season, and they did not disappoint.

The game started off with the Sammamish team receiving the ball and getting a first down after going for it on fourth and seven. The Saints got back into the game, stopping another fourth down by the Sammamish offense after a big sack by Trevor Cannon. Interlake started on the 27, with Number 13 getting a nice run, and throwing it to Trevor Cannon for two first downs. With little time left in the quarter, Interlake got some last second runs and ended the 1st quarter on the edge of the endzone with the score 0-0.

To start the second quarter, the Saints deservedly got their first points of the season by a great run into the endzone by Number 11, Keegan Roff. When asked about getting the touchdown for the Saints, he said that “I think the best part of my touchdown was the fact it was like the first one of the season, and I can just see the crowd going wild, so yeah it made me feel good”.

Sammamish got the ball back, and failed, yet again, to convert on the fourth down and some failed attempts at trick plays.

Shortly after the Interlake offense got the ball back, Number 13 made a great throw to Trevor Cannon, who then ran away from the last Sammamish defender for another Saint touchdown.. When asked about the Interlake-Sammamish rivalry, he said that “it’s simple. . . they are close to us and have always been our rival school”.

The Interlake defense then quickly ended another Sammamish drive with a sack of the quarterback. At  halftime the score was: Interlake 12, Sammamish 0!

At the start of the second half, Sammamish and Interlake engaged in a number of back-and-forths and included a phenomenal display of Interlake defense. At the end of the quarter, the score remained the same:: Interlake 12, Sammamish 0.

With some phenomenal Interlake defense keeping the score at 12-0, the fourth quarter started with a big run by Keegan Roff, followed by a quality scramble from Andersyn Long. Unfortunately, in the next play there was an unlucky fumble that was recovered by the Sammamish defense, but Abraham Gulam intercepted the quarterback’s pass to regain possession for Interlake!

Gulam said that “after the interception was the best part, everyone was excited. It was great because it was the first pick of the season”. The Interlake offense tried to do something with the ball after the interception, but a tackle for loss by the Sammamish defense forced the Saints to punt with 0:27 left on the clock. Interlake defense promptly intercepted for the second time in the game and controlled the ball to run out the clock! It was a great win for the JV team, 12-0!

Reflecting on the game, Duncan Baker said that “we are more excited and confident in ourselves” and that they are preparing for their next opponents by “studying film, and going over the opposition’s formations and plays.” It is safe to say that the JV team has proven themselves a force to be reckoned with.
